The EML offers multiple levels of service that correspond with the services and training each user desires:
- Project consultation
- Education and training for new users
- Full service microscopy
All services are available to anyone with an interest in electron microscopy: graduate and undergraduate students, post-doctoral researchers, faculty, staff, and non-UC users.
*Full-service work as staff availability allows, see below.
PROJECT CONSULTATION
For any potential user, our staff provides free consultation services to help define how electron microscopy (EM) may be utilized for the proposed project. In this consultation, users can expect the EML staff to help determine whether EM is appropriate for answering the given question of the project. The staff will assist in defining the scope of the EM to be used in the project. Further the staff will help identify what equipment (ancillary and microscope) the user would need to access in our facility to complete the EM data collection or specimen preparation for their project.
Please reach out to us via the Contact Us form or directly contact the EML Director, Danielle Jorgens (dmjorgens@berkeley.edu), to get started.
EDUCATION AND TRAINING
The EML provides basic to advanced training in all aspects of transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), from specimen preparation to image processing.
Training is available for a fee at an hourly rate. Our training is tailored to individual users, however even experienced users must demonstrate they are proficient in using the microscope of their choice. There is no flat fee for training. The final cost of the training will be determined by what the trainee wishes to learn and the extent of their previous experience.
Undergraduate or graduate students enrolled in either MCB 481B or MCB 481C receive training at NO CHARGE. Both courses are offered each semester and are usually given as individual tutorials. Students should review the MCB 481 Course webpage for details and course descriptions.
EQUIPMENT FOR TRAINED USERS
After users are trained on the electron microscope or any of the ancillary equipment within the EML, they can use the machines later by themselves. Contact the staff to get started with using an instrument or microscope.
FULL SERVICE MICROSCOPY
For full-scale projects or to get data-on-demand for grants or publications, the EML now provides fee-for-service full service microscopy for campus and external users as our staff availability allows on an ad hoc basis. The EML may not have the capacity to take on all requests, we appreciate your understanding. Use the Quotation form to request this service and ensure that you provide adequate detail on the form that the EML staff can respond appropriately. All quotations are non-binding fee estimates, meant for planning purposes only.
