THE UC BERKELEY EML

The Electron Microscope Laboratory (EML) is an imaging core and shared resource facility of the University of California at Berkeley.  Our mission is to provide high-quality electron microscopy services, education, and training for the UC Berkeley campus, other academic institutions, and private companies at-large.

The lab is equipped with high resolution transmission electron microscopes, scanning electron microscopes, high pressure freezer and full suite of ancillary sample preparation equipment to fit most EM-related needs. The equipment can provide nanometer scale analysis for biological, chemical and materials science.

The EML offers multiple levels of service that correspond with the services and training each user desires:

  • Project consultation
  • Education and training for new users
  • Equipment for trained users who anticipate having long-term EM projects
  • Full service microscopy

All services are available to anyone with an interest in electron microscopy: graduate and undergraduate students, post-doctoral researchers, faculty, staff, and non-UC users.

Please note, the EML now provides fee-for-service full service microscopy for campus and external users as our staff availability allows on an ad hoc basis.  Use the Quotation form to request this service.

In addition to providing training as a service, the EML supports two MCB courses: MCB 481 B and 481 C.  We encourage any UC Berkeley student working with a mentor on campus (undergrad or graduate level) to talk with us about taking the course. It is a great way to get trained to use the equipment in the facility.  See the MCB course section for more information.

EML STAFF

Danielle Jorgens is the director of the EML. She earned her PhD from UC Berkeley (2013) in Comparative Biochemistry, where she trained in advanced sample preparation techniques including cryopreservation for cells and tissues. She was a post-doctoral fellow and then a research assistant professor specializing in the ultrastructure of cancer biology at Oregon Health and Science University (OHSU). Her research interests focus on the ultrastructure of the nucleolus and nucleus in cancer and normal tissues. She is also interested in developing novel methods and applications for volume electron microscopy (Volume EM, FIB-SEM, SBF-SEM) and correlative light and electron microscopy (CLEM).

Reena Zalpuri earned Masters and Bachelors degrees in Biophysics from Punjab University Chandigarh, India. She had training in transmission electron microscopy while working on her research project titled “Adriamycin treated rat myocardium-light & Transmission electron microscopic study”.  She oversees the training and operation of the TEMs within the EML and teaches the TEM course (MCB 481B).

Misun Kang has expertise in various imaging and analysis techniques including light, electron microscopy, X-ray micro computed tomography, and X-ray fluorescence microscopy through graduate studies at UTK and postdoctoral training at UC Davis and UCSF. Misun has conducted extensive research on normal and pathological mineral formation in various tissues and organs such as teeth, bone, kidney stone, pulp stone, and peyronie’s plaque using correlative microscopy techniques. And now, as a new member of EML, Misun is eager to support researchers and students from a wide range of disciplines in their quest for new knowledge and discoveries. When not in the lab, Misun enjoys exploring the great outdoors by indulging in hiking and camping.

FORMER EML STAFF

Guangwei Min earned his PhD in Structure Biology from Peking University, China. His postdoc training was focused on studying the three-dimensional (3D) structure of biological macro-molecules at New York University.  He oversaw the training and operation of the SEMs within the EML, maintained the website, and taught the SEM course (MCB 481C).

Kent McDonald was the director of the EML from 1993 to when he retired in 2017.  He earned a degree in Botany from UC Berkeley (1972) and did his post-doctoral training in cell biology at the University of Colorado, Boulder.  His primary research interest was the ultrastructure of the mitotic spindle apparatus. In recent years, he became interested in development and application of cryopreservation techniques for high resolution EM and EM immunocytochemistry.  Dr. McDonald continues to be active in the EM field and is an avid photographer.

HOW TO CITE THE EML

The EML strives to provide excellent service to users and students and in-turn we hope that data collected in our facility enables excellent science.  For data collection or sample preparation conducted in our facility, by the user or our staff, we ask that the EML be acknowledged in the manuscript, publication or other media.  If a particular staff member assisted you, please acknowledge them specifically.

An example of a general acknowledgement:

“Thank you to the staff at the University of California Berkeley Electron Microscope Laboratory for advice and assistance in electron microscopy sample preparation and data collection.”

Further, we would like to highlight and elevate the profile of our user’s work and as such request that any publications be shared with us electronically so that we can link to them from our website.  See our curated list of publications HERE.

We also appreciate that not all data makes it into a publication and we are always open to highlighting images collected by our users on our website.  If you have data that you wish to have highlighted in our GALLERY, please let our staff know!

We are searching for student assistants to intern in our lab

We are seeking students majoring in Bio/Mat/Chem/Phy/EE or closely related disciplines, such as Nutritional Science & Physiology, Biophysics, or Biomedical Engineering.

Bonus points if there's a possibility of starting this summer!

Our lab is dynamic and fast-paced, requiring everyone to gain a broad range of skills. However, over time, you'll likely develop expertise in specific areas of specialization.

Email us at ucbeml@berkeley.edu to inquire.

March 19th 2024     The EML will have the following holiday closure dates, please adjust your experiment planning accordingly!

As usual, independent users will continue to have access during this time; any questions can be directed to the EML staff at ucbeml@berkeley.edu.

CLOSED:
March 29

Oct 12 2022  The Hitachi S-5000 SEM will be decommissioned Oct 19 2022 and will no longer be available for scheduling from that date onward

Our tabletop SEM systems and training are not effected by these changes.  Reach out to the EML staff with any questions you may have at ucbeml@berkeley.edu.

Sept. 28 2022  The Hitachi S-5000 SEM will be decommissioned in Oct 2022 to make space for the incoming Zeiss Crossbeam 550.  Thus, we are temporarily suspending training for high-resolution SEM projects.  The calendar for the S-5000 will be open until we have a hard date for the decommissioning.

Our tabletop SEM systems and training are not effected by these changes.  Reach out to the EML staff with any questions you may have at ucbeml@berkeley.edu.

Wishing Dr. Guangwei Min a Wonderful Retirement!

Our beloved Guangwei - truly a master of all things in the EML - is retiring from the EML after 15 amazing years.  He joined the EML in 2006, recruited from NYU out of his post-doc studying extracellular matrix proteins with cryoEM. We are going to miss his calm and reassuring nature here at the EML; along with his ability to fix everything from IT systems to changing fuses to repairing pumps.

Guangwei, we wish for you a long and joyful retirement!  Thank you for all you've done for the EML, we will miss you!  Love, the EML Staff

If you'd like to send Guangwei a message, his min@berkeley.edu will be active during his retirement.
